2024 Election: Biden and Trump Face Off in First Presidential Debate
Biden and Trump Clash on Tariffs
In the first presidential debate of the 2024 election, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump clashed over tariffs, with Biden arguing that they serve as a tax on the middle class and Trump criticizing Biden's proposed 10% tariff on goods entering the U.S.
"Tariffs are a tax on the middle class," Biden said. "They make everything more expensive for working families, and they don't do anything to help American businesses or workers."
Trump countered that tariffs are necessary to protect American jobs and businesses from unfair competition from abroad.
"We need to put America first," Trump said. "And that means protecting our workers and businesses from unfair trade practices."
Voters Face Tough Choice in November
American voters will choose between re-electing Democratic President Joe Biden or his Republican predecessor Donald Trump in the November 5 election.
Biden, 82, and Trump, 78, both have faced concerns about their age and fitness in the run-up to the election, but they have weighed more heavily on Biden.
