Covid-19 Cases in India Rise Sharply, Sparking Fears of Third Wave

841 New Cases Reported in 24 Hours, Highest in 227 Days

India has witnessed a significant surge in Covid-19 cases over the past week, raising concerns that a third wave driven by the Omicron variant may be imminent. The country has recorded more Covid cases in the last seven days than any other, fueling fears of a resurgence of the virus.

Highest Number of Active Cases in Over 200 Days

On January 12, 2023, India logged 841 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours, the highest daily tally in 227 days. The number of active cases has also increased to over 5,500, the highest in 200 days. The rise in cases has been particularly sharp in the southern states of Kerala, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

Concerns Over Omicron Variant

The sharp increase in cases has raised concerns among health experts, who suspect that the Omicron variant may be responsible for the surge. The Omicron variant is known to be more transmissible than previous strains of the virus, and it has been detected in several Indian states.

Government Response

The Indian government has taken several measures to contain the spread of the virus, including increasing testing, enforcing social distancing measures, and ramping up vaccination efforts. However, the sharp rise in cases has put pressure on the healthcare system, and there are concerns that the country may not be fully prepared for a third wave.
